Paint Colors by Room

Every room has its own paint-color logic. Bedrooms reward muted, restful tones; kitchens need brightness and easy cleaning; dining rooms can carry deeper, richer color than anywhere else in the house. The room hubs below each rank the best-suited colors from 20 paint brands against a room-specific rubric — LRV, saturation, undertone, and color family — so you can start from credible recommendations instead of a 40,000-color catalog.

How room rankings work

Every color in PaintDB is scored for each room against a deterministic, room-specific rubric. The ranker considers LRV (Light Reflectance Value), saturation, undertone, color family, and whether the color is rated for interior or exterior use. Bedrooms weight low-saturation mid-LRV colors; kitchens weight higher-LRV whites and soft cools; dining rooms weight deeper, richer mid-tones. Rules are applied identically across all 20 brands.

This is a ranking tool, not a prescription. Every room has circumstances the ranker can’t know — your natural light, your existing fixed finishes, the specific feeling you’re trying to create. Use the rankings to shorten the list, then sample your top three in the actual room before committing.
