Paint Tint Bases Explained: How Color Gets Into the Can

Why You Can't Just Tint White Paint Dark

The most common misconception at the paint counter is that any color can be mixed into any base. In practice, the colorant machines are physically limited to roughly 4 oz of colorant per gallon. That sounds like a lot, but titanium dioxide is extremely efficient at scattering light — a small amount of white pigment can resist an enormous amount of dark colorant. If you tried to tint a pastel base to Tricorn Black, you'd need 10–15 oz of black colorant to overpower the white, which is far beyond machine capacity. The result would be a muddy dark gray at best — not the intended color. Dark colors require low-TiO₂ bases from the start. LRV 10–35 → deep base. LRV below 10 → ultradeep/clear/accent base. This mapping isn't just theoretical — it's why LRV matters before you even pick up a brush. Base type has direct implications for project planning. Pastel-base colors over similar existing colors often achieve full coverage in one coat. Medium-base colors typically need two coats, especially when changing from a light to a slightly darker color or from a warm to cool hue. Deep-base colors almost always need two coats, and a tinted primer (ask the store to tint the primer toward your topcoat color) will save you a third coat and improve color accuracy. Ultradeep-base colors — dark blacks, navies, forest greens — should always start with a tinted primer. Some experienced painters add a 50% diluted version of the topcoat as an intermediate coat to build density before the final full-strength coat.
