Understanding Paint Hiding Power: Why Some Colors Take More Coats

You bought a beautiful red. One gallon. Three coats later the wall still looks streaky. The culprit isn't your technique — it's hiding power, the most overlooked number on a paint can. Here's the science behind it and how to use it to paint smarter.

You picked the perfect red. You bought a gallon — plenty for one room, you thought — and started rolling. Coat one looks pink. Coat two looks blotchy. Coat three is finally getting there, but you're running out of paint and patience. The color isn't the problem. Your technique isn't the problem. The problem is hiding power: the single most underappreciated number in paint selection, and the reason some colors feel effortless while others turn into a weekend-long battle.

What Is Paint Hiding Power?

Hiding power (also called opacity or obliterating power) measures how effectively a paint blocks the color or surface beneath it. The industry standard test, ASTM D2805, measures something called the contrast ratio: the ratio of how much light a paint reflects when applied over a black surface versus a white surface. Perfect hiding power would be a contrast ratio of 1.0 — the paint looks identical regardless of what's underneath. No paint achieves 1.0 in practice. The closer to 1.0, the fewer coats you need. Most quality interior paints rate between 0.95 and 0.99 for hiding power. The difference between 0.95 and 0.99 sounds small — it translates into a very visible difference on the wall, especially over darker substrates.

The Problematic Colors: Reds, Oranges, and True Yellows

Reds, oranges, and saturated yellows are consistently the hardest colors to cover in — regardless of the brand, the formula, or the quality tier. The reason is structural: the organic pigments that create vivid chromatic colors are inherently more transparent than TiO₂. A molecule of a red azo pigment or yellow organic dye absorbs and transmits light rather than scattering it. Deep Colors: A Different Dynamic

Deep, saturated colors — navy blues, forest greens, near-blacks — present yet another pattern. Their hiding power challenges are less about the colorant transparency and more about the sheer pigment concentration required to hit the target darkness. To get a true navy or charcoal, formulators typically use inorganic pigments (carbon black, iron blue, iron oxide) that do scatter light reasonably well, plus high concentrations of colorant. The Tinted Primer Strategy

The most effective way to improve hiding power for any problematic color is to use a tinted primer. For a vivid red, the primer might be tinted to a muted terra cotta or rust. For a strong orange, a muted warm salmon. For yellow, a light gold. If your color is a vivid red, orange, or yellow — or any color with LRV below 30 going over a very different base — run through this checklist before you open the first can. First, prime the surface with a gray-tinted primer pulled toward your topcoat color. Second, use a high-quality paint in that color family (premium lines are worth the investment for chromatic colors). Third, use a roller with the appropriate nap for your surface (3/8" for smooth walls, 1/2" for moderate texture). Fourth, apply in a W-pattern and back-roll to eliminate lap marks before each section dries. Fifth, allow full dry time between coats — reds and oranges especially need to off-gas solvents fully before the next coat goes on. Sixth, plan for three coats and consider it a bonus if two is enough.
