Color Families — Frequently Asked
- How are paint colors assigned to a family?
- Every color on PaintDB is classified by its dominant hue, using HSL color-space rules. For example, a color with hue near 0° and high saturation is assigned to the red family, while a very low-saturation, high-lightness color goes into the white family. The same rules are applied to every brand, so families are directly comparable across manufacturers.
- Which family is the most common in paint?
- Across PaintDB, beige and blue colors are the most numerous — reflecting how much of modern residential paint is devoted to neutrals. Click into a family page to see its full range across every brand.
- Can I filter a family by brand?
- Yes. Each family page has a 'Paint by Brand' section that links to the brand-scoped view, e.g. every blue color from Sherwin-Williams or every gray from Benjamin Moore.
- What's the difference between color family and undertone?
- Color family is the dominant hue (e.g. 'gray', 'blue'). Undertone is the secondary hue that influences perception — a 'gray' paint can have a warm beige undertone or a cool blue undertone, which changes how it reads in a room. PaintDB lists both for every color.
